Olexander Dmitrievich Sorokin

Oleksandr Sorokin - the leading artist of KECAF

Oleksandr Sorokin (1909-1982), member of the National Academy of Arts (1947). He graduated from the Odesa Art School named after M. Hrekov (1935, teachers: M. Zhuk, J. Dindo, O. Shovkunenko). He worked at the KECAF with a break during 1936-1980, was the chief artist, a member of the Council of the trust "Ukrfarforfayans".

Working as a painter, sculptor, author of forms, and sometimes as a molder, O. Sorokin played a significant role in the formation of Kyiv porcelain. In 1939 and 1949 he demonstrated the achievements of the early stage of the Kyiv Porcelain Factory at important art and industrial exhibitions. He was one of the first to start modeling small porcelain plastic at the factory ("Embroiderer"). He is the author of a large number of vases (including monumental ones), unique samples of which were decorated with portraits of leaders (by G. Golovina), writers, serial ones - with photoceramic landscapes, the bodies of vases were decorated with Petrykivka ornaments. He performed works for the exhibitions: painting of decorative dishes (1945-"Esmeralda"; 1957-"Friendship"); a case for watches "National Economy" (1957); a vase with a portrait of Taras Shevchenko (together with M. Timchenko and V. Poleva, 1964), developed samples of serial production (tea sets "Kyiv", etc., drawings for painting and decals). Although the artist was more impressed by the creation of decorative souvenir and gift forms (bottles, vases, frames, caskets), which he modeled with exquisite taste and often painted in the underwater technique with an airbrush with floral motifs in oriental style, close to the Japanese porcelain imari. As a master of underglaze painting, he helped to introduce these techniques at other factories.

The works of the artist participated in republican, all-Union, international exhibitions since 1939; now they are kept in the leading museums of the country.
